Beschreibung

This course develops the English language skills needed for academic and professional contexts in social work. Through communicative and interactive learning, students build confidence, fluency, and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

The course covers key topics in social work, including different fields of professional activity, addiction, substance abuse, physical and mental disabilities, and support services. Students learn and apply relevant specialist terminology, describe and compare work activities, and discuss the causes, consequences, goals, and challenges related to addiction and disability.

Students also work with English-language sources to research background information and prepare case studies from the field of social work. They develop intervention plans, present their findings clearly and effectively with the help of digital visual aids, and participate in follow-up discussions.

In addition, the course explores career opportunities in international NGOs. Students research professional requirements, discuss relevant skills, and reflect on their own competencies and career preferences.

The course includes individual and group work, with a strong focus on practical communication. Blended-learning elements, such as independent online activities, may be included and will be announced at the beginning of the semester.

Lernziele

After successful completion of the module, students will be able to,

- name, describe, and compare activities in different areas of social work and use relevant specialist terminology;
- identify and illustrate types, causes, and consequences of addiction, research related information, and discuss strategies and challenges in combating substance abuse;
- describe different physical and mental disabilities, related challenges in everyday life, and approaches to supporting people with disabilities;
- analyse a social work case study, develop an intervention plan, research English-language sources, present findings with digital visual aids, and lead a follow-up discussion;
- research careers in international NGOs, discuss requirements and skills, and describe their own competencies and preferences.

Voraussetzungen

The course is taught and tested at level B2. For this reason, students are recommended to have B1+ when starting the course.

Portfolio (grading: MET - Mit Erfolg teilgenommen)

Anwesenheitsregeln

Learning a foreign language is the most successful when the language is put into practice. For this reason, there is an attendance requirement for this course of 75%.
