Beschreibung

When engineers participate in engineering projects, they use a variety of different communication skills. It is also often necessary for them to deal with technical issues outside their own area. When the project team is international, collaborative activities and discussions are usually in English. This course aims to enhance the language skills you need for technical communication during an engineering project.

Topics:
- Participating in and leading team meetings, discussing the pros and cons of options, finding the best solution;
- Discussing and explaining the details of technical implementation;
- Decision-making and problem-solving language;
- Developing arguments in spoken and written communication;
- Using language to evaluate decisions and progress in spoken and written communication;
- Language for technical presentations;
- Technical terms and vocabulary as necessary;
- Describing processes, cause and effect, advantages and disadvantages of certain engineering decision.

Lernziele

By participating actively in class and learning independently between class sessions, participants will be able to:

- use a sufficient range of language and appropriate technical terminology to give clear, systematically developed technical descriptions with appropriate highlighting of significant points;
- express their ideas and opinions with precision, and present and respond to complex lines of argument convincingly;
- work collaboratively with people from different engineering backgrounds, by asking questions to identify common goals, comparing options for how to achieve them and explaining suggestions for what to do next;
- convey detailed information and arguments reliably, e.g., the significant point(s) of complex technical issues and research within their own technical field;
- write a journal detailing the project development with appropriate highlighting of significant points.

Portfolio (variety of oral and written tasks and a presentation)

Anwesenheitsregeln

Learning a foreign language is most successful when the language is put into practice. For this reason, there is an attendance requirement for this course of 75%.
