Beschreibung

The course "Advance Your English Part 1 (Level B1+)" is part of a UNIcert II-accredited course series (see also https://www.unicert-online.org/akkreditieren-und-zertifizieren/zertifikate/kompetenzstufen/) consisting of "1286 Advance Your English Part 1 (Level B1+)” and “1287 Advance Your English Part 2 (Level B2).” Both courses are open to students in all degree programs at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

The course "Advance Your English Part 1 (Level B1+)" covers a variety of current topics related to daily life, university life and studies, professional life, and culture, and combines these topics with listening, writing, speaking, reading, and grammar exercises. Participants will therefore expand their general, professional, and academic English skills.

The course uses the textbook "Navigate: Intermediate B1+."

The course book can be obtained:
1. At the university library on the Kurt-Schumacher-Ring campus and at the Rüsselsheim campus. There are 4–5 copies available at each location as well as one copy in the reference collection.
2. Check the bulletin board on Stud.IP, under the “Wanted & For Sale” category, to see if any students are offering the course book for sale.

Lernziele

After successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

- distinguish between main ideas and supporting details in spoken and written text;
- take notes on the main points delivered during a talk or lecture, which are precise enough for use at a later point of time;
- engage in real-time exchanges with more than one participant;
- collaborate with people from different backgrounds on shared tasks organising work and working towards a common goal in a group;
- participate in discussions;
- identify and understand main and factual information and arguments in spoken and written texts;
- paraphrase spoken or written text in a simplified form;
- write texts paying attention to organisation, paragraphing, different types of connectors, register and style;
- write and understand formal written business correspondence; produce different types of academic and job-related written texts making adequate use of text.

Voraussetzungen

English proficiency at the B1+ level
Proof via online placement test: To take the placement test, log in to Stud.IP and join the course “B1+ Placement Test.” You can access the placement test via the “ILIAS” tab in the course and the link “Course in ILIAS 9.”

Prüfungsform

Foreign Language Exam (Cumulative): Throughout the course, participants complete assessed tasks, each of which focuses on one of the four skills: writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Each skill accounts for 25% of the final grade and must be passed individually.

Anwesenheitsregeln

Learning a foreign language is most successful when the language is put into practice. For this reason, there is an attendance requirement for this course of 80%.
